• There’s a lot of graduate schemes out there... What made you choose us?
  • Post University my aim was to be a part of a Top 20 business and to be able to mention I work for a household brand name. I wasn’t too sure which route to go down, but the Halfords graduate scheme allows you to gain vast experience quickly, and also take an active part of a top, fast paced and growing environment.
  • Tell us a bit about the scheme…
  • The scheme is assembled of three rotational placements in Digital, Marketing, and Buying, with a two week in-store secondment in between each. This ultimately provides you with an in-depth knowledge of multiple business area functions. You are given responsibility from day one, with impressive projects that you can see from start to finish, that have a genuine impact to the day to day business.
  • What do you get up to on a typical day?
  • I’m currently in my first placement which is based in Social Media; I’m involved with the Facebook, Twitter and Periscope accounts on both the Halfords Brand & Cycling pages. Also I run the Halfords Instagram Page and assist with our YouTube channel. A key part of the role is monitoring competitor activity, organising competitions, Social Analytics, and creating engaging content. Alongside the day to day activities I also have a lot of free reign to be creative and work alongside other areas of the business - for example I’m currently heavily involved with the 2015 Black Friday campaign, as well as other several large digital and business wide projects.
  • Tell us about the best bits so far...
  • The best bits so far are that get given responsibility and projects from day one. You are made to feel like an involved member of the team. Seeing an idea develop into reality and seeing the positive change it has on our colleagues and our customer. Especially within Social Media this is something that can be implemented very quickly!
  • What challenges have you faced and how did you deal with them?
  • My biggest challenge would be stepping out of my comfort zone. Having to learn key processes and adapt quickly is essential within each placement, but using the great support you have from your team, colleagues, the other graduates cross-functionally ensures you can deliver to the highest standard.
  • What's it really like to work here?
  • Halfords has a real team focus feel to it. There is very little hierarchy and everyone is incredibly supportive. The office is very open planned, with a sociable yet professional environment. With each rotation you will build relationships cross functionally, that will in turn help promote the overall business aims of Halfords.
  • Tell us about the training and development...
  • Induction week provides you with a great overview of the business and a good first opportunity to meet and greet your fellow colleagues. Alongside the graduate scheme you have involvement with external speakers and your individual mentor which ensures you can reach your full potential within your role. I am also encouraged to attend any external conferences/webinars that can not only benefit me individually but also the team.
  • What's been your biggest achievement?
  • This would probably be my involvement at the NEC cycle show. The event involved heavy planning before and during the event which I co-ordinated alongside my colleagues. This involved working alongside Suppliers, Live streaming interviews, competition promotion and working with our category team to display our great Halfords Range. This work within Social was recognised across the business cross-functionally and resultantly produced some brilliant engaging content and insight to the Halfords Cycling Brand.
  • What do you think makes someone successful at Halfords?
  • Someone who isn’t afraid to throw themselves into tasks with confidence. People are always willing to help and assist you at Halfords so be sure to utilise others expertise. Also to always have the customer in mind is important to ensure success at Halfords.
  • And, to anyone thinking about applying for the scheme, what would you tell them?
  • Definitely Apply! The scheme is brilliantly set-up and gives you the opportunity to develop invaluable skills and business acumen! GO FOR IT!
