• There’s a lot of graduate schemes out there... What made you choose us?
  • I had always wanted to work within the retail sector; it is an area I can relate to where day-to-day decisions impact on our customers. The Halfords graduate scheme allows graduates to experience multiple areas of the business and understand how these areas work collaboratively with others. Having exposure to multiple areas, instant responsibility within these departments, and working for a trustworthy household brand name were key drivers of why I choose this graduate scheme.
  • Tell us a bit about the scheme…
  • The commercial graduate scheme consists of three 3-month placements within trading, marketing and digital. Before each new placement you’ll spend two weeks in your buddy store understanding and experiencing the heart of the business, getting to know how stores operate, and understanding our customers. After the first year you’ll then do a full year in one of the three areas.
  • What do you get up to on a typical day?
  • There isn’t a typical day as such. Currently I’m a Graduate Assistant Buyer in Technology for Audio, Connectivity and Dash Cams so every day is different and very busy. The main things I do on a day-to-day basis are understanding the numbers and reports, looking at key promotions for peak, looking at ways of improving our products online and building relationships with suppliers. The bigger projects I am currently working on are the Connectivity range review, the implementation of Hi-Res Audio into selected stores and a project involving Spotify. The thing I love most about working in trading for technology is that the market is constantly adapting with new innovation allowing us to continuously adapt.
  • Tell us about the best bits so far...
  • The best bit is probably being given the responsibility to own projects and seeing how these develop and integrate different areas of the business. I was also extremely grateful to be invited to attend the ‘Revving Up for Peak’ roadshows that were held in September. These two-day roadshows across the three divisions allowed me to meet Area Managers, Store Managers and Auto Leisure Managers from across the country and be a part of communicating the priorities for peak in an engaging manner.
  • What challenges have you faced and how did you deal with them?
  • The biggest challenge I have faced so far is probably getting to grips with the processes of the business quickly. You need to understand how the business and different areas work and make informed decisions so don’t be afraid to ask questions and come out of your comfort zone to contact and involve different people in your projects.
  • What's it really like to work here?
  • The culture and people who work at Halfords are great. The atmosphere is friendly, encouraging, hard working and fast paced. Whichever department you work in colleagues across the business are approachable and willing to help.
  • Tell us about the training and development...
  • Training and development is encouraged throughout the business and as a graduate you are given further opportunities to develop skills and understanding. The Retail and Commercial Graduates recently all took part in an engaging Goal Mapping day and we have a mentor that we meet with regularly for one-to-one sessions.
  • What's been your biggest achievement?
  • My biggest achievement to date is probably seeing the development of Hi-Res Audio and working with a supplier to understand how we can implement this into stores. I have been able to own this project independently with the support of my Line Manager and hopefully by the end of my placement in trading I will have seen the full implementation of this project.
  • What do you think makes someone successful at Halfords?
  • Having the confidence to convey their ideas, the initiative to take on projects and the ability to reflect on their decisions and monitor the results of projects.
  • And, to anyone thinking about applying for the scheme, what would you tell them?
  • Apply! It is a fantastic scheme full of opportunities, hands-on experience and responsibility, which allows you to thrive and develop as an individual and within a team and constantly develop new skills and knowledge.
