• There’s a lot of graduate schemes out there... What made you choose us?
  • I choose the Halfords graduate scheme to be a part of one of the UK's biggest retailers. Having been part of another graduate retail scheme I wanted a change and more opportunity, something that this scheme definitely delivers on! The challenge, the colleagues and the products are all very motivating and what makes me look forward to work every morning.
  • Tell us a bit about the scheme…
  • The scheme itself is segmented. First year is all about being a sponge and taking in as much information as possible and learning how Halfords stores and Halfords as a company works. This involves time in stores, external and internal training programmes, as well as placements in the support centre. After this you are given the responsibility of being an assistant manager in a store. After this placement(s) you are then given the responsibility of having your own store whilst working towards becoming an area manager in the not so distant future. All very exciting and engaging stuff that I personally can't wait to get further into!
  • What do you get up to on a typical day?
  • The retail cliché of every day is different definitely applies to Halfords! The day and week is essentially working with colleagues to go above and beyond for customers and achieve the stores targets in many areas. Daily task include everything from planning daily activities to improve the store, orgainising stock deliveries, helping customers (everything from simple advice, selling bikes and fitting bulbs) and working as a team towards store targets.
  • What challenges have you faced and how did you deal with them?
  • One of the biggest challenges I have encountered is my knowledge of products in Halfords. The way I have dealt with this is using all sources provided to take on as much as possible from online learning resources to colleague knowledge. I am now pretty confident with majority of the products and services Halfords offer, however still encounter this problem on a weekly basis. I get over this with a simple solution - ask! There is always a willing colleague to help and therefore I am literally learning every day.
  • What's it really like to work here?
  • Stores are a great environment to work in due to always being busy with great variety. Stores are also full of like-minded colleagues to make every day enjoyable.
  • Tell us about the training and development...
  • The training and development I have been given in my first 6 months is second to none. I have not only developed as a Halfords colleague but also significantly developed as a person. This is everything from working in stores with inspirational and experienced store managers, training courses and meetings with personal mentors. Some inspirational courses I have attended thus far include a leadership workshop involving horses and a one week summer school placement at Oxford University with some of the UK's greatest retail leaders.

The support network is also great and confidence boosting, there is always someone available if you have any questions and genuine concern is shown all the time from numerous leaders in the company about you personally.
  • What's been your biggest achievement?
  • My biggest achievement in stores so far is covering the store manager of a store for 2 weeks which was successful and finishing in the top 5 for the area in both weeks. Out of stores during my time in Oxford I led my team to a 2nd place in a apprentice style city challenge.
  • What do you think makes someone successful at Halfords?
  • A successful person at Halfords firstly needs to have a passion for people. This includes passion for customer service, passion for team work and passion for people development. Secondly they need to be driven to succeed and motivated by targets to make their store successful in measures like sales.
  • And, to anyone thinking about applying for the scheme, what would you tell them?
  • I would say apply! From my experience, Halfords are really passionate about developing people and personally I have learnt more in 6 months with Halfords than I have in 2 years in another job. I think that coupled with the opportunities in this well known UK retailer makes applying a no-brainer!
